Affecting more than 9 Million people in the US alone! "Psoriasis" is derived from the Greek word for "itch."
know the symptoms of psoriasis
A persistent, chronic disease that tends to flare up periodically. It may go into remission, but usually remains active for years. and can occur at any age. The onset of this disease is usually gradual and the diagnosis is commonly made between the ages of 15 and 35.
Some people actually have 80% of their body covered by this painful skin disorder.
This chronic skin disease can be an inherited disorder of the the skin. This abnormality of the immune system triggers release of substances that cause the cells of the skin to multiply rapidly. Ordinarily, skin cells, reproduce themselves approximately every 28 days.
In psoriasis that is active, the same portion of the skin may be reproduced every two to four days. This is what produces the thick, scaly, red plaques characterized by red itching skin which quickly builds up to rough, dry and dead skin cells. The inflammation can be frustrating if you have it, causing visually unpleasant patches of skin as well as discomfort and pain.
The most susceptible areas of the body are those considered "traumatic" areas such as the knees, elbows and surprisingly even the lower back.
Make no mistake about it, this skin disorder can strike anywhere on your body that skin is present.
Types of Psoriasis
There are currently four types.
1) plaque psoriasis, Considered the most common it can be identified by large, red, scaly patches, most often noticed on elbows and knees, but of course, can also affect any part of the body. This accounts for the majority of patients with this ailment.
2) guttate psoriasis Second most common type. Characterized by smaller, red, scaly lesions, the size of 1 or 2 cm, covering large areas of the body. Typically noted after strep throat, patients will develop a lot of little spots all over. Affecting about 10% of of those who suffer from this affliction.
The last two, are the most dangerous types of this skin disease
3) erythrodermic psoriasis The entire surface of the skin will turn bright red and scaly. Loosing all of the protective functions of the skin. The body literally can't control body temperature. The body experiences severe nutrient and fluid loss through the skin. People with this condition are more susceptible to infection since the skin barrier against infection is lost. Unknown by many, this skin disorder can be life-threatening as noted with the erythrodermic condition.
It has been reported that people have actually died from this particular skin disorder.
4) pustular psoriasis. occurring in one of two ways.
a) generalized pustular psoriasis where as with the erythrodermic type, patients again lose all of those protective functions of the skin, becoming a potentially life-threatening disease.
b) localized pustular psoriasis while, not life-threatening, is just as debilitating since it is often localized to the palms and soles of the feet. As you can imagine, these people can't use their hands or feet. They can't walk, they can't handle anything with their hands because of the pain involved.
Fortunately, these last two forms are rare and often treated by systemic steroids, or withdrawal of systemic steroids.
The Effects of Psoriasis Most often the joints are the common part of the body routinely affected by the effects of this debiliating disease. It is reported that approximately 7% of those suffering have significant psoriatic arthritis or "inflammation of the joints."Again, there are several forms of joint inflammation ranging in severity from fairly mild to debilitating. Affecting over 2.5% of the population Approximately 30% of those afflicted will have a family history of this disease. Surprisingly over 60 percent of patients actually do not know of a family history. Thus, it can affect anyone, at any age.
There are documented cases of patients who were born with this painful skin condition. On the other hand some people develop this skin condition for the first time after the age of 80. You could say the average age would be somewhere around 30 years old. How is my Immune system involved?
Generally when this disease attacks someone genetically predisposed to developing the disease, they will have some kind of immune challenge. That challenge will cause these cells which are called "lymphocytes," to go to the skin and release cytokines, which make the skin cells change. The problem faced by science is that it is unknown what exactly causes lymphocytes to behave as they do.
What is known, is that the lymphocytes causing these problems are necessary for the disease, and that eliminating their activity will assist in treatment.
The effects of of this debilitating skin disorder are far-ranging, from a patients' health to how they view themselves. Many view their condition just as disabling as diabetes or congestive heart failure. Keep in mind that unlike diabetes, it is always visible on the skin. Almost like a social stigma. Epitomized by their denial to accessing local swimming pools. Based of course on the myth that this disorder is contagious.
there is no convincing evidence that any form of this skin condition is contagious.
It is important when we think of this disease to remember both the physical and the Mental affects that come with this disabling disease.
Did you know that there are surveys reporting that the psychological toll of this condition is equal to depression? Which we add, is as severe as it gets. Over the past 20 or 30 years, a disproportionately large amount of drugs have been introduced for psoriasis when compared to other dermatological conditions. This is largely due to patient advocacy groups such as the one listed in our Recommended Resources.
